What Is The Zoom H4N?
The Zoom H4N is the latest handheld portable digital recorder from Zoom. It is widely reported to be a great improvement on previous Zoom models with greater ease of use with it’s easy menu options.
It is also reported to give superior world class and clear, rich recordings that comes with it’s 4 track recording system. It has a solid, compact build and is much easier to use than the previous Zoom models

How Does The Zoom H4N Work?
The Zoom H4N is very easy to use and many would say, a marked improvement on previous Zoom models. It has a larger LCD screen and easier menu options than the original Zoom H4 model. In addition, you can also change the audio pickup pattern by easily rotating the internal mics.

What Makes The Zoom H4N Unique?
There are so many portable digital recorders on the market so what makes the Zoom H4n different and unique?
The Zoom H4N has a number of features which make it stand out from competing recorders by Sony, Edirol and Tascam.
1) For starters, the H4n is the only handheld recorder that allows you to record on four channels simultaneously. You can use the onboard mics or external mics and direct inputs. The built-in mixer then blends the channels perfectly for rich, balanced recordings.
Although it has 2 built in microphones at the top, I wouldn’t use them in the studio unless there was nothing better. However, it’s great for people out in the field who want to get an accurate, clear recording.
2) The Zoom H4N also has rotatable mics which can be swivelled to a 90 or 120 degree angle which is great for capturing sounds which are further away so that you get more ambience and a wider stereo sound.
3) The unit also comes with a plastic carrying case, usb cable, foam windscreen, ac adapter, mic stand adapter, manuals and cubase le software, and a 1gb memory card. Most other recorders don’t come with their own AC Adapter or memory card and other companies make you buy these separately. This puts Zoom H4N in a good light and gives it even more value.
The most important quality however is the SOUND QUALITY and this needs to be your most important consideration in deciding whether to buy the Zoom H4N device in the first place. The microphones built into the unit are clear and the top end is well defined.
So How Does The Zoom H4N Sound? What’s the Sound Quality Like?
The Zoom H4N records a wide variety of sounds better than it’s predecessors. There is also less hiss especially when using the 1/8 inch input instead of the XLR inputs. The Zoom H4N sounds good with a high powered condenser mic or even with the internal mics.
Like all portable recorders with built in mics, there is the problem of handling noise. If youy’re recording and moving your hands about on the recorder, you’re going to hear the handling noise. The rubber grip on the sides of the unit makes it easier to grip.
You can, however, reduce the handling noise problem by attaching a tripod into the slot at the back of the unit. This makes recordings much smoother and more crisp.
Some users have reported that there is much more hum when using the included AC adapter. It is quieter with AA batteries and rechargeable one are preferable. You can get up to 7 hours recording in normal mode and upto 11 hours in stamina mode.

If you need a recorder for any recording project whether it’s for school, a field trip or for recreational live recordings, don’t get a cheap recorder. Instead, spend a little extra money and get the Zoom H4n. it’s seriously worth it for the quality value and it will last you much longer.
